What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Our team will guide you on immediate steps to take until your child can be seen. Here are some common situations and first-aid tips:
Toothaches or Abscesses:
A dental abscess is a serious infection near the tooth root or between teeth and gums. While anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen can ease pain, professional evaluation and possible antibiotics are necessary. Contact us as soon as possible.
Chipped or Broken Teeth:
Collect any pieces of the tooth, and have your child rinse with warm water. Stop bleeding with gauze, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Call our office for an emergency visit.
Knocked-Out Teeth:
Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently if dirty, but do not scrub or remove tissue fragments. Try to reinsert the tooth gently into its socket if possible. If not, keep it in milk and seek care within an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Partially Dislodged Teeth:
Call us right away to schedule care. Use a cold compress for comfort and consider giving over-the-counter pain relief as needed.
Lost Fillings or Crowns:
Secure an appointment promptly. Bring the crown with you; we may place a temporary restoration to protect your child’s tooth.
Oral Injuries and Bleeding:
Rinse the mouth with a mild saltwater solution. Apply gentle pressure with moist gauze or a tea bag for 15–20 minutes. A cold compress can also help with pain or swelling. If bleeding does not stop, come to our office or go to the nearest ER.
